Wanna Read 249% Faster? …I Did

 

If there’s one thing that has always felt like a thorn in my side when it comes to getting things done, it’s that

I READ SOOO FREAKING SLOW.

When studying in school, I felt like i had a disadvantage because it took me longer to do assignments. I just felt like i couldn’t get through the material fast enough.

I’ve also been the guy that takes months to read ONE book (partly because of my 3rd-grade attention span, partly because of slow reading). I would have to read and re-read, then daydream, and realize 3 pages later that I didn’t remember anything that i had read.

I wish i had witnesses??

I know a lot of (especially) dudes struggle with this. My dad and many of my friends have expressed this frustration to me.

Then…

I came across this thing from Tim Ferris that said you could increase your speed by 300% in 20 minutes. I was pretty skeptical…but i trust Tim, and i had heard of him selling this same “course” to fellow students when he studying was at Princeton.

So i went through it.

It’s a step-by-step practice session that takes you through a series of drills. These drills are meant to make you uncomfortable, but train your eyes and your brain to get their tails in gear.

Here are my stats from the first 2 training sessions (20-minutes each):

Session 1

1-minute test before: 231 words
1-minute test after: 472 words
Increase: 204%

Session 2

1-minute test before: 448
1-minute test after: 576
Increase from session one: 128%
Toal increase : 249%

Summary: In only 40 minutes of practice, i went from reading 231 per minute to 576 words per minute. For a 249% increase in speed.

To put that in context: The average reading speed in America is 200-300 words. And if you read at faster than 400 wpm, you are in the top 1%.

The more you practice this method the more it will help you increase retention and speed. I’m not sure how sustainable the 576 speed will be on average…but consistent practice and reading will help.

    I am usually skeptical of ideas that a simple trick can dramatically change your life; however, this trick did improve my words per minute. Before WPM: 248 After WPM: 367 I think it could definitely help with my academics, including many reading assignments! As well, I think my results will improve with more practice.

    I’ve seen something like this before with a drill that makes you move your eyes really fast from left/right and up/down. This technique was way better. I was hesitant to think this would work but it really did help. Before WPM: 198 (I know, can’t get worse), After WPM: 418. I think this will help me actually be able to finish a book from cover to cover, which I regret I haven’t done in quite a while because I lose focus and it takes too long. :)

    I am a police detective and I am constantly reading reports. My WPM before: 200.6 (at the bottom end of the average). After just one session my WPM: 389.4 (that puts me close to the 1% range). I cannot wait to see where I will be after four or more sessions. I think this will be a great exercise before sitting down to read after any extending time away from reading. Thanks Adam for introducing me to this.

    Working as a business consultant, reading faster and understanding more would, without any doubt, make my life easier (and, surely, give me some more free time). After getting disappointed with some“infallible tricks” that promised miraculous improvements in reading speed and/or comprehension, I must admit my expectations were not very high. However, I got very surprised, going from 432 WPM to 708 WPM after only the first session.

    Thank you for such a useful post! I’ll definitely keep practicing and I’ll recommend these exercises to my colleagues.
